For a long time, I was mourning the lack of Cissie King-Jones in the series; I think she was intended to be in there at the beginning, but they went with Artemis instead. However, with each episode, I find myself liking Artemis more and more. She's flawed. She squabbles with Wally like nothing else. And yet... she's also the voice of snarky reason and ego-deflation.
( The latest episode... cut for spoilersCollapse )
That said, given the promo posters for next season, I wonder if it wasn't prophetic in some way on M'gann's part. Jaime is great, but I really don't want to lose Kaldur, and ... yeah. D:

Like
suzie_b, I don't usually post about this sort of stuff, but...

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.
Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.
Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.
Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.
What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.
The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.
So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.
If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.
What to do?
- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.
- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.
- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.
- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

Thanks to
elsewhere7, I started watching Tiger and Bunny. Someone described it as a cross between NASCAR and superhero anime; it's... somewhat true. Except I don't think NASCAR has this much, er, well, slash potential in it.

Yarn!
May. 3rd, 2011 | 03:44 pm
Before I head to Montana, I have to help my aunt sort through my grandmother's yarn stash. It's actually fairly interesting, intimidating, and horrifying all at the same time.
This is why:
The Yarn Stash
This does not include the miscellaneous/unlabelled balls, the wool that my aunt wants to keep, or the second two closets (that is one closet's worth of yarn).
I'll have pictures as soon as I can get them off of the camera.

When I had a bit of Christmas money left, I wound up commissioning a bit of art for a character on Four Color. It was posted today:

Weather!
Dec. 14th, 2010 | 07:06 pm
"It's going to be a bad winter, since we had such a nice one last year!"
"But it's the end of November and we still haven't had any snow. Hell, it's still fairly WARM."
Oh, I regret that now. We had three feet of snow last week, which shut the university down for the three remaining days of class, which screwed up turn-in dates, which in turn screwed up a lot of other things -- mostly to do with planning out my study schedule -- because the libraries closed. Awkward.
And now? Now, we're due for more snow, and 402 is closed due to the weather. Hopefully it clears up before Sunday. :X
They also just sent out an email saying, "Exams scheduled for this evening (December 14) at The University of Western Ontario are continuing. However, students, staff or faculty living north or west of London scheduled to write or supervise exams tonight should not attempt to travel to campus if driving conditions appear hazardous and should notify the course professor as soon as possible if they are unable to come in."

Awkward.
Nov. 2nd, 2010 | 12:27 pm
There's a possible faculty strike starting tomorrow. I'm honestly of two minds about this: on one side, I get more time to study for Business; on the other, I like my classes and I'd like my Christmas break to actually be a break rather than a week off before hastily trying to catch up.
Still having fun with FCC, though. Just need two more fish for third-alt fun, but I still need ideas for scenes to run -- I have one for Jian, but catching his player when I'm actually awake enough to do anything about it is difficult.
Anyone have a favourite recipe for pumpkin bread and/or pumpkin pie? I have a pie pumpkin and the back half of my jack-o-lantern (which was, well, Jack from Nightmare Before Christmas, thanks to Bri's help with carving it).

Cryoburn

The Advance Readers' Copy of Bujold's 'Cryoburn' is available here. All I'm going to say after finishing it is that I adore Roic more and more, and Mark remains wonderfully snarky.

Back in London, ON. I already miss Montana's mountains, warmth and dry air; it's been cool, grey and muggy since arriving back here, with brief moments of sunshine.
My room this year is actually fairly brilliant. I have my own sink! No more awkward conversations while attempting to brush my teeth or wash my face. Bri is next door, and Jasmine further along, so the hallway is quiet. There's a great deal more closet/drawer space in this dorm as well, given that the furniture is built-in instead of standing wardrobes, etc.
One thing I actually am fond of here is the crickets and... cicadas, I guess? The quiet drone is rather soothing, and since my room looks out over the fields surrounding the dorm, I get it particularly loud. It doesn't drown out the street noise, though, which is something I'll have to get used to.
Another source of stress is my grandmother -- the South African one -- as she took a fall a week and a half before I was due to arrive here. She broke a rib and is concussed, so she's still in the hospital; we're worried that she just doesn't want to hang on anymore, as she doesn't really want to eat, and doesn't really want to /fight/, which is so... odd, with her. I can understand it to some extent, though: she's lived a full life and wants to meet her God and all her friends who have passed before her, as she believes will happen. Honestly, I can't blame her. I don't even think it's my right to stop her.
My aunt is here as a result of this, so we've had interesting conversations. My aunt is, you see, one of those delightfully direct people.

I freely admit that I adore the latest Doctor's Companion, Amy Pond, though there are problems with her characterization (largely stemming, I think, from the fact that while Karen Gillan is adorable, she is not the best of actresses); I miss the Amy who slammed the Doctor's tie in a car door and /made him/ explain things.
That said, what the hell, fandom? Amy? Not the most monogamous of people for all that she does, in fact, love Rory. She's not likely to fall to pieces after marrying Rory and then deciding she only loves the Doctor, angst and pine away, etc., etc.
From what we've seen of her ("I've got my boys!"/"You may DEFINITELY kiss the bride!") she's more likely to drag both the Doctor AND Rory into something while Rory flails and sputters and protests and finally gives in because it makes Amy happy, and ... honestly, I have no idea what the Doctor'd do. I think he sometimes sees Amy as Amelia, the little girl he cared so much about, and other times he sees Amy, who is definitely not a child by most people's standards.
This is possibly due to the fact that Amy probably is the most childish of the trio. Rory had already grown up, being a nurse and noticing the coma patients in the first episode. Amy, on the other hand, acts on impulse and on emotion rather than logic in many cases (as witness her emotion-based intuitive action on Spaceship UK), and is closer to the Doctor in that respect (Vampires of Venice, their babble-communication re: omg vampires eee), thus, Rory is a necessary third point to stabilize the relationship.
... anyway, to get back to my main point, dudes, stop having Amy attempt to commit suicide/give up on life/be absolutely apathetically miserable in her marriage to Rory because, /really/, not IC.
